Wine Market Size in Belarus

For the fourth consecutive year, the Belarusian wine market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 12% to $X in 2022. In general, the total consumption indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +77.0% against 2016 indices. Wine consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Wine Production in Belarus

In value terms, wine production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the production volume increased by 2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Wine Exports

Exports from Belarus

In 2022, shipments abroad of wine and grape must decreased by -39.5% to X litres, falling for the third consecutive year after eight years of growth. Overall, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 126% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wine exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 91%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ukraine (X litres) was the main destination for wine exports from Belarus, with a 31% share of total exports. Moreover, wine exports to Ukraine exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mongolia (X litres), sixfold. Israel (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Ukraine amounted to -2.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mongolia (+10.3% per year) and Israel (+3.9% per year).

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) remains the key foreign market for wine and grape must exports from Belarus, comprising 23% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mongolia ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Israel, with a 1.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Ukraine amounted to +4.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mongolia (+13.3% per year) and Israel (+1.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average wine export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, picking up by 4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Georgia ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Mongolia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Wine Imports

Imports into Belarus

Wine imports into Belarus amounted to X litres in 2022, picking up by 14% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 21%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, wine imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +98.3% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 30%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Moldova (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of wine to Belarus, accounting for a 29% share of total imports. Moreover, wine imports from Moldova exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X litres), fourfold. Italy (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Moldova was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+22.7% per year) and Italy (+15.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest wine suppliers to Belarus were Moldova ($X), Italy ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 30% of total imports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +20.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average wine import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, declining by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per litre), while the price for Ukraine ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
