In 2021, overseas shipments of wheat starch decreased by -5.2% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 110%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wheat starch exports expanded to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Indonesia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of wheat starch exports from Australia, with a combined 52% share of total exports. These countries were followed by China, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 34%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +49.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Australia

In 2021, purchases abroad of wheat starch decreased by -56.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 141% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wheat starch imports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Hong Kong SAR (X tons), China (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of wheat starch imports to Australia, together accounting for 87% of total imports. France, the United States and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.
