In 2022, the construction sands market in Australia and Oceania decreased by -19.6% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed tangible growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Construction Sands Exports

Exports in Australia and Oceania

Construction sands exports contracted significantly to X tons in 2022, dropping by -76.6% against 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 2,265%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, construction sands exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a precipitous decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 502% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Australia prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2022. New Zealand (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Australia decreased at an average annual rate of -5.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, New Zealand (+11.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the largest construction sands supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 45%. Guam represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 49% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Australia (X tons), New Zealand (X tons), New Caledonia (X tons) and Tuvalu (X tons), together achieving a 41% share of total imports. Palau (X tons) and Papua New Guinea (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Guam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the construction sands imports, with a CAGR of +17.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Papua New Guinea (+4.2%), Australia (+2.4%) and New Zealand (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Tuvalu experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Palau (-4.8%) and New Caledonia (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Guam (+43 p.p.), Australia (+6.8 p.p.), New Zealand (+5.1 p.p.) and Tuvalu (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest construction sands importing markets in Australia and Oceania were Australia ($X), New Zealand ($X) and New Caledonia ($X), together comprising 76% of total imports. Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, Guam and Palau lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Papua New Guinea, with a CAGR of +6.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Australia and Oceania amounted to $X per ton, rising by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Papua New Guinea ($X per ton), while Guam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
