Paperboard Case Material Exports

Exports in Australia and Oceania

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of paperboard case materials increased by 4.6% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 7.8%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paperboard case material exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Australia represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 62% of total exports. It was distantly followed by New Zealand (X tons), achieving a 38% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Australia (with a CAGR of -1.3%).

Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 11%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paperboard case material imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 14%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

New Zealand represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 58% of total imports. Australia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 27% share, followed by Fiji (9.9%) and Papua New Guinea (5.1%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to paperboard case material imports into New Zealand stood at +2.3%. At the same time, Fiji (+17.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Fiji emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +17.5% from 2012-2022. Papua New Guinea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Australia (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
