In 2022, the Asian unbleached sulphite pulp market increased by 9.7% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a perceptible downturn. Unbleached Sulphite Pulp Exports

Exports in Asia

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of unbleached sulphite pulp decreased by -50.9% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 142%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, unbleached sulphite pulp exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 153%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Singapore (X tons) represented the major exporter of unbleached sulphite pulp, comprising 62% of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Japan (13%). Malaysia (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to unbleached sulphite pulp exports from Singapore stood at +11.4%. At the same time, Japan (+46.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +46.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-6.0%), Indonesia (-8.1%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-16.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (+50 p.p.) and Japan (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Taiwan (Chinese) (-39 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest unbleached sulphite pulp supplying countries in Asia were Singapore ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together accounting for 69% of total exports. Japan and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

Among the main exporting countries, Japan, with a CAGR of +59.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 18%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia

In 2022, overseas purchases of unbleached sulphite pulp increased by 34% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unbleached sulphite pulp imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 45%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

China dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 80% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), generating a 6.5% share of total imports. Pakistan (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to unbleached sulphite pulp imports into China stood at +3.3%. At the same time, Pakistan (+11.1%) and Israel (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +11.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Philippines (-19.1%), Hong Kong SAR (-19.5%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-21.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China, Israel and Pakistan increased by +44, +4.6 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported unbleached sulphite pulp in Asia, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +5.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (+19.5% per year) and Pakistan (+17.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 32% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
