For the fourth year in a row, the Asian unbleached sulphate pulp market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 18% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +79.7% against 2013 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, unbleached sulphate pulp production reduced dramatically to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 135%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Unbleached Sulphate Pulp Exports

Exports in Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of unbleached sulphate pulp were exported in Asia; growing by 12% compared with the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 60%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unbleached sulphate pulp exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +55.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Japan (X tons) was the largest exporter of unbleached sulphate pulp, constituting 74% of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by China (X tons). All these countries together took near 21% share of total exports. The following exporters - Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - each finished at a 3.6% share of total exports.

Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of unbleached sulphate pulp. At the same time, Vietnam (+33.1%), Indonesia (+27.7%), China (+14.3%) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +33.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Indonesia (+14 p.p.) and China (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Japan (-20 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the largest unbleached sulphate pulp supplier in Asia, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 9.1% share.

In Japan, unbleached sulphate pulp exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+11.5% per year) and Indonesia (+24.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.4% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, unbleached sulphate pulp export price increased by +44.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+11.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia

In 2022, the amount of unbleached sulphate pulp imported in Asia skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 26% on 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +98.0% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, unbleached sulphate pulp imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

China prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 67% of total imports in 2022. South Korea (X tons) took an 8.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (5.7%). The following importers - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), India (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the unbleached sulphate pulp imports, with a CAGR of +8.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Indonesia (+6.1%), India (+5.9%) and Thailand (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Taiwan (Chinese), Malaysia and South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. China (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Malaysia, Taiwan (Chinese), Thailand and South Korea saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -2.4%, -3.7% and -6.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +12.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+4.0% per year) and Thailand (+3.7% per year).

In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 11% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
