In 2022, the Asia-Pacific uncoated felt paper market decreased by -20.4% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +29.2% against 2018 indices. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Uncoated Felt Paper Exports

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, approx. X tons of uncoated felt paper and paperboard were exported in Asia-Pacific; dropping by -13.7% against 2021 figures. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -14.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 36%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, uncoated felt paper exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

The biggest shipments were from Indonesia (X tons), together recording 99% of total export.

Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the uncoated felt paper and paperboard exports, with a CAGR of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Indonesia increased by +4.4 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) also remains the largest uncoated felt paper supplier in Asia-Pacific.

The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Indonesia.

In 2022, approx. X tons of uncoated felt paper and paperboard were imported in Asia-Pacific; with a decrease of -70% on the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 50%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, uncoated felt paper imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) was the main importer of uncoated felt paper and paperboard, making up 53% of total imports. Pakistan (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Australia (12%), China (6.4%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (5.3%). The following importers - Indonesia (X tons) and Japan (X tons) - together made up 6.2% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncoated felt paper imports into Vietnam stood at -2.7%. At the same time, Australia (+137.8%), Pakistan (+71.2%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+31.4%) and Indonesia (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Australia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +137.8% from 2012-2022. Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Pakistan (+14 p.p.), Australia (+12 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-2 p.p.) and Vietnam (-6.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported uncoated felt paper and paperboard in Asia-Pacific, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam totaled +13.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-7.8% per year) and Australia (+107.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 174% against the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed a modest increase. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+16.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
