Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of semi-chemical fluting, when their volume decreased by -26.7% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, semi-chemical fluting exports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 55%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

South Korea prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 74% of total exports in 2021. Indonesia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Thailand (X tons). All these countries together held near 11% share of total exports. The following exporters - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), New Zealand (X tons), India (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to semi-chemical fluting exports from South Korea stood at +31.9%. At the same time, India (+54.0%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+17.3%) and Indonesia (+14.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +54.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, New Zealand (-13.9%), Thailand (-16.9%) and Malaysia (-18.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Korea (+65 p.p.), Indonesia (+3.6 p.p.), India (+2.7 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while New Zealand, Malaysia and Thailand saw its share reduced by -13.4%, -14.9% and -32.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Korea ($X) remains the largest semi-chemical fluting supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Korea stood at +33.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+15.5% per year) and Thailand (-15.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 38% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, overseas purchases of semi-chemical fluting decreased by -16.2% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, semi-chemical fluting imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Philippines (X tons), China (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented roughly 73% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - South Korea (X tons), Australia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), New Zealand (X tons), India (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) - together made up 21% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +49.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X), China ($X) and Bangladesh ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 61% of total imports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Lao People's Democratic Republic, India and Sri Lanka, which together accounted for a further 33%.

Among the main importing countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +50.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in New Zealand ($X per ton) and India ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
