Roundwood Exports

Exports in Asia-Pacific

Roundwood exports skyrocketed to X cubic meters in 2022, rising by X% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, roundwood exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Japan represented the major exporter of roundwood in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports accounting for X cubic meters, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. Vietnam (X cubic meters) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Malaysia (X cubic meters), New Zealand (X cubic meters) and Australia (X cubic meters). All these countries together took near X% share of total exports. India (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of roundwood. At the same time, India (X%), Vietnam (X%) and Australia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. New Zealand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (X p.p.), Japan (X p.p.), Australia (X p.p.), India (X p.p.) and New Zealand (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, New Zealand ($X) remains the largest roundwood supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a X% share.

In New Zealand, roundwood exports expanded at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (X% per year) and Malaysia (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, falling by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by X%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per cubic meter), while Vietnam (less than $X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, supplies from abroad of roundwood increased by X% to X cubic meters, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports showed a significant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, roundwood imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Vietnam prevails in imports structure, finishing at X cubic meters, which was near X% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Japan (X cubic meters) and New Zealand (X cubic meters), together comprising a X% share of total imports. Australia (X cubic meters) and South Korea (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to roundwood imports into Vietnam stood at X%. At the same time, New Zealand (X%), Japan (X%), Australia (X%) and South Korea (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, New Zealand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022.
