Molluscs Exports
Exports in Asia-Pacific
In 2023, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus), when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. In general, exports continue to indicate a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, molluscs exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
China represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Japan (X tons), together constituting a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Pakistan (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.
Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Pakistan (X%), India (X%) and Japan (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Vietnam (X%), New Zealand (X%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of China, India, Pakistan, Japan and Indonesia increased by X, X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest molluscs supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a X% share.
In China, molluscs exports increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (X% per year) and Indonesia (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2023, declining by X% against the previous year. Over the last eleven-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of X%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 an increase of X%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific
Molluscs imports rose notably to X tons in 2023, growing by X% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, molluscs imports reduced to $X in 2023. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
China represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached X% of total imports. South Korea (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Thailand (X tons) and Japan (X tons). All these countries together took near X% share of total imports. The following importers - Vietnam (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) - each accounted for a X% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Japan ($X) and South Korea ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2023, together comprising X% of total imports. Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan (Chinese) and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Among the main importing countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, which is down by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when the import price increased by X%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
