Diamond Market Size in Asia-Pacific

For the third year in a row, the Asia-Pacific diamond market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -X% to $X in 2020. Overall, consumption, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 when the market value increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. from 2009 to 2020, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Diamond Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, diamond production declined significantly to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. In general, production recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when the production volume increased by X% year-to-year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, production failed to regain the momentum.

Production By Country in Asia-Pacific

Singapore (X tonnes) remains the largest diamond producing country in Asia-Pacific, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, diamond production in Singapore exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, South Korea (X tonnes), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Australia (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Singapore amounted to +X%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: South Korea (+X% per year) and Australia (+X% per year).

Diamond Exports

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2020, shipments abroad of diamonds and other precious stones (unworked) decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2015, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, exports attained the peak of X tonnes. from 2011 to 2020, the growth exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, diamond exports contracted markedly to $X in 2020. In general, exports showed a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Singapore was the major exporting country with an export of around X tonnes, which amounted to X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by China (X tonnes), South Korea (X tonnes) and India (X tonnes), together constituting a X% share of total exports. Australia (X tonnes) and Hong Kong SAR (X tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2020, average annual rates of growth with regard to diamond exports from Singapore stood at +X%. At the same time, South Korea (+X%), China (+X%), India (+X%) and Australia (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2020. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+X p.p.), South Korea (+X p.p.), China (+X p.p.), India (+X p.p.) and Australia (+X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -X% from 2007 to 2020, respectively.

In value terms, the largest diamond supplying countries in Asia-Pacific were Hong Kong SAR ($X), Singapore ($X) and India ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports.

Singapore recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the diamond export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per tonne, falling by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a temperate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export prices reached the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per tonne), while South Korea ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR, while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2020, supplies from abroad of diamonds and other precious stones (unworked) decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tonnes. from 2009 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, diamond imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2020. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2020, India (X tonnes) represented the largest importer of diamonds and other precious stones (unworked), creating X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by China (X tonnes), generating a X% share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2020, average annual rates of growth with regard to diamond imports into India stood at +X%. At the same time, China (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2020. China (+X p.p.) and India (+X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
