In 2021, the average yield of mustard seed in Asia fell slightly to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -4.7% against the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the mustard seed yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of mustard seed decreased by -23.4% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 132% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
In value terms, mustard seed exports expanded to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 109%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
India represented the major exporter of mustard seed in Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 81% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), constituting a 13% share of total exports. The following exporters - the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) - each finished at a 3.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to mustard seed exports from India stood at +6.2%. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+32.1%) and Myanmar (+16.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +32.1% from 2012-2021. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. India (+5.3 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -8.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest mustard seed supplier in Asia, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 8.9% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 1.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India totaled +7.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-0.9% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+32.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of mustard seed were imported in Asia; jumping by 38% on 2020. Overall, imports saw modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, mustard seed imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw moderate growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Bangladesh (X tons) and Nepal (X tons) dominates imports structure, together generating 76% of total imports. The following importers - Japan (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Mongolia (with a CAGR of +9.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest mustard seed importing markets in Asia were Bangladesh ($X), Nepal ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined 78% share of total imports. Thailand, Sri Lanka and Mongolia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
Mongolia, with a CAGR of +13.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
