The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
Production of Motorcycles, Scooters And Side-Cars in Asia
In value terms, motorcycle, scooter and side-car production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +15.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 75% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Asia
Motorcycle, scooter and side-car exports skyrocketed to X units in 2021, surging by 47% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports enjoyed a strong increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, motorcycle, scooter and side-car exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +114.3% against 2012 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
China prevails in exports structure, reaching X units, which was near 82% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by India (X units), making up a 7.9% share of total exports. The following exporters - Thailand (X units) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) - together made up 5% of total exports.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the motorcycles, scooters and side-cars exports, with a CAGR of +17.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+10.9%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+8.9%) and India (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China increased by +11 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest motorcycle, scooter and side-car supplier in Asia, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with a 12% share.
In China, motorcycle, scooter and side-car exports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+10.7% per year) and India (+8.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -5.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per unit), while China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Motorcycles, Scooters And Side-Cars
Imports in Asia
In 2021, the amount of motorcycles, scooters and side-cars imported in Asia surged to X units, picking up by 18% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, motorcycle, scooter and side-car imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +95.8% against 2012 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Philippines (X units) represented the key importer of motorcycles, scooters and side-cars, comprising 28% of total imports. Japan (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Hong Kong SAR (X units), South Korea (X units) and Vietnam (X units). All these countries together took approx. 28% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X units), Nepal (X units), Myanmar (X units), Malaysia (X units), Iraq (X units), Thailand (X units), Kazakhstan (X units) and Turkey (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
The Philippines experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of motorcycles, scooters and side-cars. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+56.4%), Hong Kong SAR (+29.6%), South Korea (+25.8%), Vietnam (+25.7%), Iraq (+19.1%), Thailand (+16.7%), Japan (+14.9%), Nepal (+11.5%), the United Arab Emirates (+11.2%), Malaysia (+10.8%) and Turkey (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +56.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Myanmar (-10.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Hong Kong SAR (+6.1 p.p.), Japan (+5.3 p.p.), South Korea (+5.1 p.p.), Vietnam (+4 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+2.8 p.p.), Iraq (+2 p.p.), Thailand (+1.7 p.p.), Nepal (+1.6 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Myanmar and the Philippines saw its share reduced by -11.2% and -16.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Philippines ($X), Japan ($X) and Vietnam ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 42% of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, Thailand, Nepal, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Hong Kong SAR, Myanmar, Iraq and Kazakhstan, which together accounted for a further 29%.
Among the main importing countries, Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +31.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per unit, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, motorcycle, scooter and side-car import price decreased by -10.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
