From 2017 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were China (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Turkey (X tons), with a combined 99.9% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Turkey (with a CAGR of +1.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.
The average melon seed yield stood at X kg per ha in 2021, remaining stable against 2020. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the melon seed harvested area in Asia amounted to X ha, approximately reflecting the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 27%. In 2021, approx. X tons of melon seed were exported in Asia; with a decrease of -38.9% compared with the year before. In general, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, melon seed exports expanded to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 15%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
China dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), mixing up a 9.4% share of total exports. Turkey (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to melon seed exports from China stood at -8.8%. At the same time, Turkey (+41.4%) and India (+10.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +41.4% from 2012-2021. While the share of India (+9.4 p.p.) and Turkey (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of China (-11.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest melon seed supplier in Asia, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled -1.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+28.7% per year) and Turkey (+8.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a resilient increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+16.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia
In 2021, approx. X tons of melon seed were imported in Asia; declining by -75.2% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 382%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, melon seed imports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 56%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
India dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 72% of total imports in 2021. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 7.3% share, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (5.8%). Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to melon seed imports into India stood at +42.0%. At the same time, Syrian Arab Republic (+72.3%) and Jordan (+16.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Syrian Arab Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +72.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-4.6%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+72 p.p.) and Syrian Arab Republic (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Taiwan (Chinese) (-27.1 p.p.) and Thailand (-30.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported melon seed in Asia, comprising 15% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 4.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Jordan, with a 4.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India amounted to +53.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+10.4% per year) and Jordan (+4.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 148% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+15.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
