After four years of growth, the Asian laptop and tablet computer market decreased by -30.9% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible slump. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Production of Laptops and Palm-Top Computers in Asia

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Asia

For the third consecutive year, Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of laptops and palm-top computers, which increased by 18% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 27%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

China dominates exports structure, resulting at X units, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Hong Kong SAR (X units) and Vietnam (X units) - together made up 5.9% of total exports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of laptops and palm-top computers. At the same time, Vietnam (+12.7%) and Hong Kong SAR (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +12.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of China (+1.7 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest laptop and tablet computer supplier in Asia, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 4.4% share of total exports.

In China, laptop and tablet computer exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hong Kong SAR (+7.8% per year) and Vietnam (+15.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit), while China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Laptops and Palm-Top Computers

Imports in Asia

In 2021, supplies from abroad of laptops and palm-top computers increased by 18% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after five years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +84.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Japan (X units), Hong Kong SAR (X units), India (X units), the United Arab Emirates (X units) and South Korea (X units) represented roughly 63% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X units) and Indonesia (X units), together comprising a 9.9% share of total imports. The following importers - Thailand (X units), Malaysia (X units), Turkey (X units), Saudi Arabia (X units) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) - together made up 16% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +10.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest laptop and tablet computer importing markets in Asia were Japan ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and India ($X), together accounting for 48% of total imports.

India, with a CAGR of +15.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
