Hop Market Size in Asia

The Asian hop market stood at $X in 2020, surging by X% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the market value increased by X% year-to-year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, consumption remained at a lower figure.

China (X tonnes) remains the largest hop producing country in Asia, comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, hop production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Democratic People's Republic of Korea (X tonnes), threefold. The United Arab Emirates (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total production with a X% share.

In China, hop production decreased by an average annual rate of -X% over the period from 2007-2020. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Democratic People's Republic of Korea (-X% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+X% per year).

The average hop yield declined modestly to X tonnes per ha in 2020, leveling off at 2019. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009 when the yield increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tonnes per ha. from 2010 to 2020, the growth of the hop yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2020, the harvested area of hops in Asia contracted to X ha, approximately equating 2019 figures. Overall, the harvested area saw a mild slump. China (X tonnes) remains the largest hop producing country in Asia, comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, hop production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Democratic People's Republic of Korea (X tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by the United Arab Emirates (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China amounted to -X%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Democratic People's Republic of Korea (-X% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+X% per year).

In 2020, shipments abroad of hops decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, exports attained the peak of X tonnes. from 2011 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hop exports contracted to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Pakistan was the key exporter of hops in Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tonnes, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2020. China (X tonnes) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by India (X%) and Turkey (X%). South Korea (X tonnes), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tonnes) and Saudi Arabia (X tonnes) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Pakistan increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020. at the same time, South Korea (+X%), Turkey (+X%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+X%) and India (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2020. by contrast, Saudi Arabia (-X%) and China (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2020, the share of Pakistan, India, Turkey, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese) and Saudi Arabia increased by +X%, +X%, +X%, +X%, +X% and +X% percentage points, while China (-X p.p.) saw their share reduced.

In value terms, India ($X), China ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2020, with a combined X% share of total exports. In 2020, the hop export price in Asia amounted to $X per tonne, which is down by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 an increase of X% year-to-year. The level of export peaked at $X per tonne in 2019, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. in 2020, the country with the highest price was India ($X per tonne), while Pakistan ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
