Eggplant Market Size in Asia

In 2020, the Asian eggplant market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a two-year declining trend. At the same time, Israel (+X%), Saudi Arabia (+X%), Bangladesh (+X%), Iran (+X%), Uzbekistan (+X%), Thailand (+X%), Malaysia (+X%) and Turkey (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2020. By contrast, Jordan (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+X p.p.), Iran (+X p.p.), Malaysia (+X p.p.) and Israel (+X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2007-2020, the share of Jordan (-X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) emerged as the largest eggplant supplier in Asia, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Turkey ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+X% per year) and Malaysia (+X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The eggplant export price in Asia stood at $X per tonne in 2020, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export prices reached the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per tonne), while China ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tonnes in 2010; however, from 2011 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, eggplant imports stood at $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% y-o-y. The level of import peaked at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
