Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, bentonite exports rose to $X in 2019. In general, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs in 2019 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

India was the key exporter of bentonite in Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2019. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by China (X%) and Azerbaijan (X%). Cyprus (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2019, average annual rates of growth with regard to bentonite exports from India stood at +X%. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+X%) and Turkey (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2019. By contrast, China (-X%) and Cyprus (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+X p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cyprus and China saw its share reduced by -X% and -X% from 2007 to 2019, respectively. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, bentonite imports declined to $X in 2019. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2007 to 2019: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last twelve-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% y-o-y. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2019, Indonesia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented the largest importers of bentonite in Asia, together generating X% of total imports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Thailand (X tons), Japan (X tons), China (X tons) and South Korea (X tons). All these countries together occupied approx. X% share of total imports. Oman (X tons), India (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) occupied a little share of total imports.

In 2019, the bentonite import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -X% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2019, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2019, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
