Wine Production in Africa
In value terms, wine production declined slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of wine and grape must increased by 30% to X litres for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wine exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X litres, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Togo (X litres), committing a 5.1% share of total exports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wine and grape must. At the same time, Togo (+90.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +90.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Togo (+5.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-3.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wine supplier in Africa, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per litre in 2021, shrinking by -7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per litre), while Togo totaled $X per litre.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-1.2%).
Wine Imports

In 2021, approx. X litres of wine and grape must were imported in Africa; with an increase of 12% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wine imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X litres), followed by Angola (X litres), Algeria (X litres), Guinea-Bissau (X litres), Togo (X litres), Ghana (X litres) and Morocco (X litres) were the key importers of wine and grape must, together committing 52% of total imports. Burkina Faso (X litres), Cameroon (X litres), Gabon (X litres), Equatorial Guinea (X litres), Cabo Verde (X litres) and Nigeria (X litres) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +21.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wine importing markets in Africa were Ghana ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Cameroon ($X), with a combined 23% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Angola, Gabon, Morocco, Algeria, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Togo, Cabo Verde and Burkina Faso, which together accounted for a further 35%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +17.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per litre in 2021, growing by 10% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 15%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per litre; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per litre), while Burkina Faso ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
