Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, walnut exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), Benin (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together committing a X% share of total exports. Nigeria (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the walnuts exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Algeria (X%), Benin (X%), Mozambique (X%) and Cameroon (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (X%) and Nigeria (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire, Mozambique, Benin, Algeria and Cameroon increased by X, X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), South Africa ($X) and Mozambique ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined X% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by X%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of walnuts decreased by less than X% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, walnut imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Morocco was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Algeria (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together making up a X% share of total imports. Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the walnuts imports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Algeria (X%), Egypt (X%) and Tunisia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Morocco (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Tunisia (X p.p.) and Egypt (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported walnuts in Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a X% share.
