The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 21%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, exports of uncoated kraft liner in Africa contracted markedly to X tons, waning by -20.5% compared with the year before. Overall, exports saw a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner exports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 2.8%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the key exporter of uncoated kraft liner, comprising 71% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Egypt (5.1%). Senegal (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncoated kraft liner exports from South Africa stood at -7.9%. At the same time, Egypt (+53.3%), Senegal (+23.3%) and Tanzania (+14.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +53.3% from 2012-2021. Tanzania (+17 p.p.), Egypt (+5 p.p.) and Senegal (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -23.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest uncoated kraft liner supplier in Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -9.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+16.0% per year) and Egypt (+51.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Tanzania ($X per ton) and Egypt ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of uncoated kraft liner imported in Africa declined slightly to X tons, shrinking by -3.4% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 22%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest levels of uncoated kraft liner imports in 2021 were Egypt (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together finishing at 87% of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Angola (with a CAGR of +24.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest uncoated kraft liner importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and Kenya ($X), with a combined 45% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, South Africa, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Algeria and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

Angola, with a CAGR of +23.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 18%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
