The African uncoated filter paper market contracted modestly to $X in 2022, which is down by -3.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Uncoated Filter Paper Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of uncoated filter paper and paperboard increased by 33% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, uncoated filter paper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the major exporter of uncoated filter paper and paperboard, creating 59% of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Morocco (13%), Egypt (6.6%) and Zimbabwe (5.2%).

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Morocco (+36.9%), Tunisia (+12.7%) and Zimbabwe (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +36.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-5.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+13 p.p.), Tunisia (+10 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt and South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.1% and -16.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest uncoated filter paper supplier in Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 7.4% share.

In South Africa, uncoated filter paper exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+14.2% per year) and Egypt (-6.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -7.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 40%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

After three years of decline, overseas purchases of uncoated filter paper and paperboard increased by 30% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, uncoated filter paper imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 35%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) represented the major importers of uncoated filter paper and paperboard, together constituting 81% of total imports. Kenya (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest uncoated filter paper importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Egypt ($X), together accounting for 61% of total imports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +12.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 8.4%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
