Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unbleached sulphate pulp exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 714% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main exporter of unbleached sulphate pulp, comprising 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X tons), generating a 17% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

In 2022, overseas purchases of unbleached sulphate pulp were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unbleached sulphate pulp imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a strong increase. Nigeria (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) dominates imports structure, together committing 76% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), making up an 8.3% share of total imports. In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported unbleached sulphate pulp in Africa, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 7.8% share.
