In 2022, the African tobacco market decreased by X% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a slight descent. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Tobacco Production in Africa
In value terms, tobacco production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by X%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff), when their volume increased by X% to X tons. Total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, tobacco exports rose to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the six major exporters of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff), namely Zimbabwe, Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire and Uganda, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Nigeria (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising X% of total exports. Zimbabwe, Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by X%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tobacco Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, the amount of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) imported in Africa shrank to X tons, which is down by X% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tobacco imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Algeria was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at X% of total imports. Sudan (X tons) held a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Libya (X%), Burkina Faso (X%) and Zimbabwe (X%). Egypt (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Congo (X tons), Burundi (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Algeria increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Burundi (X%), Burkina Faso (X%), Zimbabwe (X%), Sudan (X%), Nigeria (X%), Madagascar (X%), Senegal (X%), Congo (X%) and Libya (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burundi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tunisia (X%), South Africa (X%) and Egypt (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Algeria (X p.p.), Sudan (X p.p.), Burkina Faso (X p.p.), Zimbabwe (X p.p.), Nigeria (X p.p.), Burundi (X p.p.), Madagascar (X p.p.), Libya (X p.p.) and Congo (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa and Egypt saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) in Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with an X% share of total imports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with an X% share.
In Algeria, tobacco imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (X% per year) and Burkina Faso (X% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
