The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of statuettes and other ornamental articles of plastic decreased by -9.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports saw a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plastic ornamental articles exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 57% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the key exporter of statuettes and other ornamental articles of plastic, generating 57% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (6.1%) and Rwanda (4.6%). Uganda (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Benin (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Rwanda (+182.5%), Uganda (+23.9%), Egypt (+15.9%), Benin (+8.7%), Mozambique (+7.6%) and Morocco (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +182.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kenya (-2.6%) and Tunisia (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+8.8 p.p.), Rwanda (+4.6 p.p.), Uganda (+2.6 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Tunisia (-1.8 p.p.) and South Africa (-14.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest plastic ornamental articles supplier in Africa, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -7.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+18.8% per year) and Tunisia (-4.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+28.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, plastic ornamental articles imports in Africa contracted modestly to X tons, falling by -4.3% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 35%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, plastic ornamental articles imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +104.8% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Ghana (X tons), followed by Senegal (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mayotte (X tons) represented the key importers of statuettes and other ornamental articles of plastic, together comprising 60% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +56.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 37% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +61.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -9.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 14%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while Mayotte ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+15.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
