For the fourth year in a row, Africa recorded growth in overseas shipments of silk shawls and scarves, which increased by X% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, silk shawl and scarf exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In 2022, Tunisia (X units) was the key exporter of silk shawls and scarves, committing X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X units), generating an X% share of total exports.

Exports from Tunisia increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Tunisia (X p.p.) and Madagascar (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2022, imports of silk shawls and scarves in Africa dropped markedly to X units, waning by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, silk shawl and scarf imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild contraction.
