Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of semi-chemical fluting increased by 8% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, semi-chemical fluting exports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +79.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Angola (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together mixing up 83% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 5.7% share, followed by Ghana (5.5%). Senegal (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Senegal (with a CAGR of +26.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest semi-chemical fluting supplier in Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +1.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+2.4% per year) and Egypt (+1.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -10.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, semi-chemical fluting imports in Africa declined rapidly to X tons, falling by -16.1% on the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 18%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, semi-chemical fluting imports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Morocco represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 29% of total imports. Senegal (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (9.1%), Egypt (8.6%), Zimbabwe (7.1%) and Ghana (6.1%). Nigeria (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to semi-chemical fluting imports into Morocco stood at +5.5%. At the same time, Senegal (+13.1%), Ethiopia (+12.0%), Zimbabwe (+2.3%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +13.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-1.5%), Ghana (-4.4%), Cameroon (-4.4%), Nigeria (-5.6%), Kenya (-9.5%) and Egypt (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia increased by +16, +8, +3.5, +2.7 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported semi-chemical fluting in Africa, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 9% share.

In Morocco, semi-chemical fluting imports increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Senegal (+17.1% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Ethiopia ($X per ton) and Morocco ($X per ton), while Cameroon ($X per ton) and Senegal ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
