Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of salt and pure sodium chloride decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, salt exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Tunisia (X tons), distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) were the major exporters of salt and pure sodium chloride, together constituting X% of total exports. Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest salt supplying countries in Africa were Namibia ($X), Egypt ($X) and Tunisia ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Botswana, Senegal, Kenya and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of salt and pure sodium chloride decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, salt imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) was the largest importer of salt and pure sodium chloride in Africa, mixing up X% of total import. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Niger (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Libya (with a CAGR of X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of X%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
