Refined Palm Oil Market Size in Africa

In 2020, the African refined palm oil market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 when the market value increased by X% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Refined Palm Oil Production in Africa

In value terms, refined palm oil production totaled $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007 to 2020; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2015; afterwards, it flattened through to 2020.

Production By Country in Africa

The countries with the highest volumes of refined palm oil production in 2020 were Nigeria (X tonnes), Ethiopia (X tonnes) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tonnes), together comprising X% of total production. These countries were followed by Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Algeria, Madagascar, Morocco, Somalia, Malawi and Cameroon, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of refined palm oil production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Tanzania, while refined palm oil production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Africa

In 2020, the amount of refined palm oil exported in Africa dropped rapidly to X tonnes, which is down by -X% against 2019 figures. Overall, exports, however, showed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, refined palm oil exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

Ghana represented the major exporter of refined palm oil in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tonnes, which was near X% of total exports in 2020. Uganda (X tonnes) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Kenya (X tonnes), Togo (X tonnes), Cote d'Ivoire (X tonnes), Rwanda (X tonnes), South Africa (X tonnes) and Niger (X tonnes). All these countries together held near X% share of total exports.

Exports from Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020. At the same time, Rwanda (+X%), South Africa (+X%), Niger (+X%), Togo (+X%) and Uganda (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2020. Kenya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2020, the share of Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, Togo and Niger increased by +X%, +X%, +X%, +X%, +X% and +X% percentage points, while Kenya (-X p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-X p.p.) saw their share reduced.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Uganda ($X) and Kenya ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2020, with a combined X% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Togo, Rwanda, Cote d'Ivoire, South Africa and Niger, which together accounted for a further X (+X% per year) saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The refined palm oil export price in Africa stood at $X per tonne in 2020, rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, export price attained the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2009 to 2020, the growth in terms of the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per tonne), while Niger ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda, while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Refined Palm Oil Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2020, supplies from abroad of refined palm oil decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. The volume of import peaked at X tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, refined palm oil imports rose rapidly to $X in 2020. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, imports decreased by -X% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2020, Egypt (X tonnes), followed by Nigeria (X tonnes), South Africa (X tonnes), Mozambique (X tonnes), Djibouti (X tonnes), Ghana (X tonnes) and Angola (X tonnes) were the key importers of refined palm oil, together comprising X% of total imports. Benin (X tonnes), Tanzania (X tonnes), Togo (X tonnes), Senegal (X tonnes), Mauritania (X tonnes) and Algeria (X tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In 2020, the refined palm oil import price in Africa amounted to $X per tonne, growing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2012 to 2020, the growth in terms of the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
