Potato Market Size in Africa

The African potato market contracted to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Potato Production in Africa

In value terms, potato production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Egypt (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), together comprising X% of total production. Morocco, Kenya, Malawi, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Rwanda, Sudan, Angola and Guinea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Guinea (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average potato yield in Africa contracted to X tons per ha, standing approx. at 2021 figures. In general, the yield continues to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the yield increased by X%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of potatoes were harvested in Africa; almost unchanged from the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of potatoes was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, potato exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt represented the key exporter of potatoes in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Ethiopia (X%) and Morocco (X%). Kenya (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kenya (X%), Morocco (X%), Ethiopia (X%) and South Africa (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. While the share of Egypt (X p.p.) and Kenya (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Ethiopia (X p.p.) and South Africa (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt totaled X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (X% per year) and Ethiopia (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of potatoes increased by X% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Egypt was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at X% of total imports. Algeria (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons). All these countries together held near X% share of total imports. Mali (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to potato imports into Egypt stood at X%. At the same time, Uganda (X%), Zimbabwe (X%), Mali (X%), Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Morocco (X%), Mauritania (X%), Djibouti (X%) and Namibia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tunisia (X%), Senegal (X%), Somalia (X%) and Algeria (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (X p.p.), Uganda (X p.p.), Mali (X p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (X p.p.), Zimbabwe (X p.p.) and Morocco (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Tunisia (X p.p.), Somalia (X p.p.), Senegal (X p.p.) and Algeria (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
