Pistachio Market Size in Africa

For the fifth consecutive year, the African pistachio market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by X% against 2017 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Pistachio Production in Africa

In value terms, pistachio production skyrocketed to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by X%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Madagascar (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons).

The average pistachio yield declined modestly to X kg per ha in 2022, flattening at 2021. The yield indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pistachio yield increased by X% against 2016 indices. Exports in Africa

In 2022, exports of pistachios in Africa declined notably to X tons, dropping by X% against 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pistachio exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

For the fifth consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of pistachios, which increased by X% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pistachio imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded X% of total imports. Morocco (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Algeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Libya (X tons). All these countries together took near X% share of total imports. The following importers - South Africa (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - each finished at a X% share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pistachios imports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Libya (X%), Morocco (X%) and South Africa (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (X%) and Tunisia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (X p.p.), Morocco (X p.p.) and Libya (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (X p.p.), Tunisia (X p.p.), Algeria (X p.p.) and Egypt (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
