South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pig iron and spiegeleisen exports, with a CAGR of +X% from 2012 to 2021. Libya (-X%) and Algeria (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Libya and Algeria saw its share reduced by -X% and -X% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

From 2017 to 2021, the growth imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pig iron imports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Morocco (X tons), distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) were the main importers of pig iron and spiegeleisen, together making up X% of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) and Congo (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Niger (with a CAGR of +X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
