Paper And Paperboard Exports
Exports in Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paper and paperboard exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Mozambique was the main exporter of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) held a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (X%) and Tunisia (X%). Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper and paperboard exports from Mozambique stood at X%. At the same time, Tunisia (X%) and Cote d'Ivoire (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Kenya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (X%) and Egypt (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mozambique (X p.p.), Tunisia (X p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (X p.p.) and Egypt (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest paper and paperboard supplying countries in Africa were Egypt ($X), Mozambique ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Tunisia, Kenya and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
Among the main exporting countries, Tunisia, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
Paper and paperboard imports expanded markedly to X tons in 2022, increasing by X% against 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports surged to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Namibia (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) were the major importers of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated), together constituting X% of total imports. Algeria (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Libya (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
