The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 56%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

X-ray examination preparations exports rose remarkably to X tons in 2021, growing by 12% on 2020. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, x-ray examination preparations exports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 92%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 84% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), achieving an 8% share of total exports. Mauritius (X kg), Kenya (X kg) and Egypt (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+80.4%) and Mauritius (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +80.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kenya (-5.4%) and Egypt (-19.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+21 p.p.) and Morocco (+7.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-10.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest x-ray examination preparations supplier in Africa, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 6.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +9.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+55.1% per year) and Mauritius (+2.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -18.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, x-ray examination preparations export price decreased by -27.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 26%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+10.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations decreased by -23.9% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 121%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, x-ray examination preparations imports fell sharply to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 33% of total imports. Morocco (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Algeria (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Egypt (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 46% share of total imports. Libya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+45.2%), Cote d'Ivoire (+27.8%), Senegal (+23.5%), Kenya (+12.1%), Algeria (+11.0%), Morocco (+2.4%) and Libya (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +45.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-10.1%) and Egypt (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+7.9 p.p.), Algeria (+6.2 p.p.), South Africa (+5 p.p.), Kenya (+4 p.p.) and Senegal (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-6.4 p.p.) and Egypt (-18.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest x-ray examination preparations importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Egypt, Kenya, Tunisia, Nigeria, Libya, Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire, which together accounted for a further 26%.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +38.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 72%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+11.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
