The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Non-cane molasses exports surged to X tons in 2021, picking up by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-cane molasses exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 73%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Egypt dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), comprising a 9.3% share of total exports. Kenya (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kenya (+56.4%) and Morocco (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +56.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Egypt and Kenya increased by +9.7 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest non-cane molasses supplier in Africa, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 9.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt totaled +12.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+2.7% per year) and Kenya (+22.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of molasses (excluding cane molasses) imported in Africa rose rapidly to X tons, picking up by 5.8% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 82%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-cane molasses imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Tunisia represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 59% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), making up a 29% share of total imports. The following importers - Namibia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - together made up 7.1% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-cane molasses imports into Tunisia stood at -4.4%. At the same time, Tanzania (+104.4%) and Namibia (+17.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +104.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Botswana (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania and Namibia increased by +29 and +3.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Namibia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 66% share of total imports.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +86.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
