Methanol Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of methanol (methyl alcohol) exported in Africa reduced markedly to X tons, falling by X% on the year before. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed tangible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, methanol exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Equatorial Guinea (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) dominates exports structure, together making up X% of total exports. Algeria (X tons) and Libya (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Egypt (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Equatorial Guinea ($X) remains the largest methanol supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Algeria, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Equatorial Guinea was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (X% per year) and Algeria (X% per year).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Libya (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Methanol imports surged to X tons in 2022, with an increase of X% compared with the previous year. In general, imports saw a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, methanol imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to X% of total imports. Angola (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Egypt (X%), Nigeria (X%) and Kenya (X%). Ghana (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to methanol imports into South Africa stood at X%. At the same time, Ghana (X%), Tanzania (X%), Kenya (X%) and Nigeria (X%) displayed positive paces of growth.
