In 2022, shipments abroad of mattocks, picks, hoes and rakes increased by X% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mattocks and rakes exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together creating X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Rwanda (X tons), constituting an X% share of total exports. Uganda (X tons), Malawi (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malawi (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest mattocks and rakes supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (X% per year) and Rwanda (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of X%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Cameroon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of mattocks, picks, hoes and rakes, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, mattocks and rakes imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

Mozambique was the major importer of mattocks, picks, hoes and rakes in Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2022. Uganda (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Ghana (X tons). All these countries together took near X% share of total imports. The following importers - Kenya (X tons), Burundi (X tons), Angola (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mattocks, picks, hoes and rakes imports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Burundi (X%), Ghana (X%), Uganda (X%), Angola (X%), Burkina Faso (X%), Rwanda (X%) and Nigeria (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%) and Kenya (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (X p.p.), Uganda (X p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X p.p.) and Burundi (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Tanzania and Kenya saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
