Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of lettuce and chicory exported in Africa reached X tons, with an increase of X% against the year before. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Somalia (X tons), distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Djibouti (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) represented the largest importers of lettuce and chicory, together making up X% of total imports. The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by X% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lettuce and chicory import price increased by X% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
