Laser Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of lasers, other than laser diodes exported in Africa reduced remarkably to X units, which is down by X% against 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, laser exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt represented the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which reached X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X units), Morocco (X units) and Kenya (X units), together comprising a X% share of total exports. Algeria (X units), Cameroon (X units) and Angola (X units) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (X%), Kenya (X%), Angola (X%), Algeria (X%) and Cameroon (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Morocco (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Egypt (X p.p.), Senegal (X p.p.), Morocco (X p.p.), Kenya (X p.p.), Algeria (X p.p.) and Angola (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest laser supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Algeria, with a X% share.

In Egypt, laser exports expanded at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (X% per year) and Algeria (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, surging by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of X%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Morocco ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Laser imports shrank modestly to X units in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, laser imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed perceptible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Sierra Leone (X units), distantly followed by Angola (X units), South Africa (X units), Morocco (X units), Ethiopia (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) represented the key importers of lasers, other than laser diodes, together achieving X% of total imports. Nigeria (X units), Algeria (X units), Namibia (X units), Egypt (X units), Tanzania (X units), Senegal (X units) and Madagascar (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Sierra Leone was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lasers, other than laser diodes imports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022.
