The total production indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of lamp holders, plugs and sockets increased by 2.7% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, lamp holder exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 76%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

Tunisia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented roughly 75% of total exports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by South Africa (10%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Tunisia (with a CAGR of +20.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest lamp holder supplier in Africa, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Tunisia amounted to +20.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+4.0% per year) and Egypt (+24.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -10.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 33%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+10.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of lamp holders, plugs and sockets was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports recorded pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 150% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lamp holder imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest importer of lamp holders, plugs and sockets, achieving 30% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) took a 9.6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Djibouti (6.5%), Tanzania (6.2%), Tunisia (4.8%) and Ethiopia (4.8%). Egypt (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Angola (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Djibouti (+51.6%), Ethiopia (+27.4%), Sudan (+17.5%), Tanzania (+15.6%), Senegal (+12.7%), Ghana (+11.5%), Tunisia (+11.0%) and Morocco (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Djibouti emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +51.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-3.6%), Egypt (-4.5%), Algeria (-8.0%) and Nigeria (-18.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+14 p.p.), Djibouti (+6.3 p.p.), Ghana (+5.3 p.p.), Tanzania (+4.3 p.p.), Ethiopia (+4.3 p.p.), Sudan (+2.8 p.p.) and Tunisia (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola, Egypt, Algeria and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -2.3%, -4.7%, -5.7% and -18.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Morocco ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 50% of total imports. Egypt, Ghana, Djibouti, Algeria, Tanzania, Sudan, Ethiopia, Senegal, Angola and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Djibouti, with a CAGR of +49.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 5.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lamp holder import price increased by +65.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 117%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
