In 2022, shipments abroad of iron or steel solid fuel domestic appliances was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 310%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, metal solid fuel appliances exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +31.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X units), together accounting for 97% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the iron or steel solid fuel domestic appliances exports, with a CAGR of +20.5% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of South Africa (+36 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 123%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, metal solid fuel appliances imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +93.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 52%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the major importer of iron or steel solid fuel domestic appliances in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was approx. 41% of total imports in 2022. Morocco (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Botswana (X units) and Mozambique (X units). All these countries together held near 37% share of total imports. The following importers - Mauritius (X units), Egypt (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Libya (X units) - together made up 11% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -6.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+66.5%), Morocco (+46.0%), Zimbabwe (+39.0%), Mozambique (+15.9%), Mauritius (+6.6%) and Egypt (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +66.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Libya (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Morocco, Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Mauritius increased by +16, +14, +5.8, +2.7 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 12% share.

In South Africa, metal solid fuel appliances imports increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+18.8% per year) and Zimbabwe (+43.9% per year).

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
