Exports in Africa

In 2022, exports of instruments used in medical sciences in Africa contracted remarkably to X tons, waning by -17.4% against the year before. Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +23.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, medical instruments exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 102%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Tunisia represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 58% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by South Africa (16%). Kenya (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Tunisia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the instruments used in medical sciences exports, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kenya (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-3.3%) and South Africa (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tunisia (+32 p.p.) and Kenya (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-12.1 p.p.) and South Africa (-25 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest medical instruments supplier in Africa, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 8.4% share.

In Tunisia, medical instruments exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-5.1% per year) and Egypt (+1.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -2.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, medical instruments export price increased by +49.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 79%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of instruments used in medical sciences imported in Africa shrank slightly to X tons, waning by -2.6% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports continue to indicate a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 157%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, medical instruments imports stood at $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of medical instruments imports in 2022 were Senegal (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together resulting at 61% of total import. Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +10.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Tunisia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 41% share of total imports. Algeria, Ethiopia, Angola, Senegal, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, Zambia, Nigeria and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +12.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a measured expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 192%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+18.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
