In 2022, overseas shipments of glass fibres and glass fibre articles decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, glass fibre and article exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Egypt represented the key exporter of glass fibres and glass fibre articles in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2022. Morocco (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Tunisia (X%). South Africa (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

The countries with the highest levels of glass fibre and article imports in 2022 were Morocco (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together resulting at X% of total import. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together mixing up a X% share of total imports. The following importers - Nigeria (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tunisia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined X% share of total imports. Egypt, Algeria, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Angola, Kenya, Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
