Footwear Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of footwear increased by X% to X pairs, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked at X pairs in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, footwear exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Kenya (X pairs), South Africa (X pairs), Tunisia (X pairs) and Morocco (X pairs), together amounting to X% of total export. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X pairs), generating an X% share of total exports. Rwanda (X pairs) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per pair, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per pair in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per pair), while Kenya ($X per pair) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X pairs of footwear were imported in Africa; shrinking by X% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. The volume of import peaked at X pairs in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, footwear imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2022, South Africa (X pairs) represented the major importer of footwear, achieving X% of total imports. By contrast, Libya (X%), Djibouti (X%), Uganda (X%) and Kenya (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
