In 2022, the average fonio yield in Africa amounted to X kg per ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the yield increased by X%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the fonio yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the fonio harvested area in Africa was estimated at X ha, stabilizing at 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to fonio production attained the maximum at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Fonio Exports
Exports in Africa
After three years of growth, shipments abroad of fonio decreased by X% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
In value terms, fonio exports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Mali (X tons) represented the major exporter of fonio, achieving X% of total exports. Guinea (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons) and Senegal (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fonio exports from Mali stood at X%. At the same time, Senegal (X%), Burkina Faso (X%), Guinea (X%) and Cote d'Ivoire (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. While the share of Burkina Faso (X p.p.), Senegal (X p.p.), Mali (X p.p.), Guinea (X p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (X p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest fonio supplying countries in Africa were Mali ($X), Guinea ($X) and Senegal ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, the amount of fonio imported in Africa shrank notably to X tons, reducing by X% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fonio imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Congo was the main importer of fonio in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Gabon (X tons), committing a X% share of total imports.
Congo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fonio imports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. Gabon (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Congo (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Gabon saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Congo ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fonio in Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Gabon ($X), with a X% share of total imports.
In Congo, fonio imports expanded at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2022.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by X% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year.
