In value terms, extracts of tea exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a modest increase. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Kenya (X tons) was the main exporter of extracts, essences and concentrates of tea or mate, constituting X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), generating a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - South Africa (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.
Exports from Kenya increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (X%), Tunisia (X%) and Egypt (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (X p.p.), Egypt (X p.p.) and Tunisia (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (X p.p.) and Kenya (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Kenya ($X) remains the largest extracts of tea supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a X% share.
In Kenya, extracts of tea exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (X% per year) and Tunisia (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by X%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, approx. X tons of extracts, essences and concentrates of tea or mate were imported in Africa; with a decrease of X% against the year before. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, extracts of tea imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Burkina Faso represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at X% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Senegal (X%) and Angola (X%). Mozambique (X tons), Mali (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Libya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Burkina Faso increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (X%), Mali (X%), Tanzania (X%), Mozambique (X%), Libya (X%), Angola (X%), Morocco (X%), Nigeria (X%) and South Africa (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kenya (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mali, Mozambique, Tanzania and Angola increased by X, X, X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
