Durum Wheat Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African durum wheat market increased by X% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2022, the average yield of durum wheat in Africa shrank to X tons per ha, declining by X% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The durum wheat harvested area was estimated at X ha in 2022, standing approx. at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of X%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the durum wheat harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of durum wheat increased by X% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, durum wheat exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a buoyant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at X% of total exports. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Mozambique (X%), Swaziland (X%) and Mauritius (X%). Burkina Faso (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of durum wheat. At the same time, Senegal (X%), Swaziland (X%), Mauritius (X%) and Mozambique (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Burkina Faso experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Senegal (X p.p.), Mozambique (X p.p.), Swaziland (X p.p.), Mauritius (X p.p.) and Burkina Faso (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest durum wheat supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports.

Senegal, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by X% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of X%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In value terms, durum wheat imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by X% against 2019 indices.
