Construction Sands Market Size in Africa

The African construction sands market amounted to $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, construction sands production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Construction Sands Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of construction sands decreased by -15.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 20,751% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, construction sands exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 229% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

Mozambique represented the major exporter of construction sands in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), mixing up a 17% share of total exports. The following exporters - South Africa (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 7% of total exports.

Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the construction sands exports, with a CAGR of +149.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+14.5%) and Tunisia (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-3.9%) and Morocco (-20.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+76 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco saw its share reduced by -5%, -7% and -51.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X) remains the largest construction sands supplier in Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 8.8% share.

In Mozambique, construction sands exports expanded at an average annual rate of +113.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+20.7% per year) and South Africa (-1.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 13,098%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+25.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of construction sands, when their volume increased by 15% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, construction sands imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kenya (X tons), distantly followed by Cabo Verde (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the largest importers of construction sands, together achieving 76% of total imports. Algeria (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +62.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kenya ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported construction sands in Africa, comprising 21% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kenya totaled -8.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-5.6% per year) and Egypt (+7.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Cabo Verde ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
