In 2021, shipments abroad of concentrated grapefruit juice was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, concentrated grapefruit juice exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 120%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda was the key exporter of concentrated grapefruit juice in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), making up a 36% share of total exports. Zambia (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Rwanda (with a CAGR of +124.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest concentrated grapefruit juice supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Rwanda ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 2.6% share.

In South Africa, concentrated grapefruit juice exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Rwanda (+101.0% per year) and Swaziland (-0.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -20.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+10.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of concentrated grapefruit juice increased by 19% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, concentrated grapefruit juice imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a slight curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the eleven major importers of concentrated grapefruit juice, namely Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Lesotho, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Chad, Namibia and Mauritius, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Egypt (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Chad (with a CAGR of +49.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Botswana ($X), Kenya ($X) and Somalia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 38% share of total imports. Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, Chad, Lesotho, Ghana, Egypt, Uganda and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

Chad, with a CAGR of +51.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 4.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
