Common Clay Exports

Exports in Africa

For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of common clay, which increased by X% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, common clay exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Senegal dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), creating a X% share of total exports.

Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of common clay. At the same time, Egypt (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. While the share of Egypt (X p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review.

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by X%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Senegal totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (X%).

Imports in Africa

In 2022, common clay imports in Africa shrank to X tons, which is down by X% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, common clay imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, the largest common clay importing markets in Africa were Tunisia ($X), Algeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), together comprising X% of total imports. South Africa, Morocco, Kenya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Cameroon and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
